Score at the Shore
A Strong Showing for the Girls

The Jersey United Spartans Girls program had a great weekend at the Score at the Shore Tournament in Greensboro, NC.  The Score Tournament is a unique tournament that encompasses an invitational showcase and competitive tournament play.  The tournament has a strong history of attracting top teams as well as hundreds of college coaches and recruiters each year.  Unlike other events teams are not placed into flights before the event begins. Every team has the opportunity to win a championship. The first portion of the tournament is a seeding event and the second is a knockout event.   Every team plays three group games. Group winners and wild cards, if any, will move on to the tournament championship playoffs. Every other team will be placed into another playoff group determined by how they finish in the group.

The 94-95 Spartans Girls (formerly Charge) qualified out of group play with 20 teams and finished with a 1-1-1 record which was good enough to qualify for the Red Championship or the second highest qualifying group.  The Spartans then went on to defeat the New Hampshire State Cup Champions, Sea Coast United, in penalty kicks.  Goalkeeper Tori Gonzalez saved 5 straight penalties to secure the victory.  The team continued on to defeat Triangle FC Navy in the Semi-Finals and Patriots FC (NY State Cup Champs) in the final to be crowned Champions of the Red Group.

The 94-95 Spartans Girls (formerly Magic) qualified out of group play with 20 teams and finished with an 0-2-1 record which qualified them for the White Championship or the 3rd highest qualifying group.  The team went on to defeat their first opponent, Georgia Soccer Association Phoenix, to earn a place in the finals against a very strong MPS Lady Crusaders team.  The Spartans were overpowered in the final but ended the weekend on a high note as finalists in their respective group.

The 93-94 Spartans Girls (formerly Attack) qualified out of group play with 36 teams and finished with a 2-1-0 record which qualified them for the Overall Championship or the top qualifying group and the right to compete for the overall tournament championship.  The team defeated Tophat Gold 12 from Georgia by a score of 2-1 and followed that with a strong 3-0 win Northern Virginia Junior Majestics.  The team suffered its first defeat of the weekend to Triangle Futbol Club Navy by a score of 2-0.  The girls were pitted against the NJ State Cup Champions in the first round.  Although the Spartans had the better of play throughout the game, they were unable to capitalize on their many opportunities which included 3 breakaways, 1 hit crossbar, and a penalty that was not given.  A defensive error cost the game but the team had an incredible showing against the eventual overall tournament champions.

The 92-93 Spartans Girls (formerly Strikers) also qualified out fo group play with 40 teams and finished with a 2-1-0 record which qualified them for the Overall Championship or the top qualifying group and the right to compete for the overall tournament championship.  The Spartans lost their first game to Triangle Futbol club despite the better of play and chances throughout the game.  However, they were able to come back and soundly win the next 2 games versus SYC Liberty (#15 in Virginia) and the Score at the Shore Chaos.  The girls went on to defeat the Rockville Centre Power.  This qualified the Spartans for a second round matchup against the South Jersey Barons.  Unfortunately the team lost 1-0 despite having the better of play throughout the match.
