The Jersey United Spartans 3 teams returned from the SYL nationals after a competitive weekend. The U13B lost in the national final and returned the second best SYL team in the nation. Congratulations to Coach Nigro and the boys after winning 4 games and only losing in the final 3-2.
The U16B got off to a great start winning on the opening day 4-0, but suffered a tough loss to an excellent Alliance team on day two, 2-0, which ended their chances of qualifying and the weekend petered out. But coach brown said, "The boys played very well the first two days and on another day we could have gotten something versus alliance but it wasn't our day. I was proud of the way the boys handled themselves over the weekend and look forward to our next event".
The U13G came out swinging versus the GA state cup champions and ECNL team and found themselves 2-0 on day one at half time. It was backs against the wall time in the second half but unfortunately two late goals added to one conceded early in the second half and went down 3-2. These were the only goals the GA team conceded all weekend and they went onto win the final 9-0. A win, a tie and a loss in the consolation game rounded out the weekend for the girls, who showed great spirit all week long. Coach Pollard said, "I was so proud of the girls for their attitude and play over the course of the week, they played some great competition and if things would have gone differently on the first day we showed we have the quality and positive attitude to have gone on to win the whole thing. Now we focus on winning our ASL bracket."
The Spartans have ended their current participation in the SYL as they focus the club on college showcase tournaments. The Club is excited to have graduated from the Super Y League into the more showcased based Atlantic Soccer League. Director of Coaching, Dennis Jackson said of the Spartans ending their participation in the SYL, “the Super Y League has served the club to this point well, however we feel that showcasing our players at numerous events through the ASL league, is more in line with the philosophy of the club, it is very important to us as a club to provide the best atmosphere for showcasing all our players and our entry into the ASL is going to do that at the highest level possible.” Club President Martin Brown added, “the Super Y League has been great for our competitive edge, but the most important thing to us as a club is showcasing our players at the top events consistently throughout the year and we feel this natural graduation from SYL to ASL will provide our players that opportunity.”
