Monmouth University has a history of an outstanding soccer team with consistent performances in the NCAA tournament, with three appearances since 2006, Monmouth is a program to be reckoned with. Monmouth has a .500 record overall since 1982 and a .575 record in the in the NEC Conference. Dylan is following in some big footsteps as recent Monmouth graduate GK Bryan Meredith was drafted by the MLS side Seattle Sounders. Dylan knows he will have to work hard but is excited with his opportunity. Dylan is a Roxbury native and has been a member of Jersey United since he was 10 years old and has been coached by his current coach and JU President Martin Brown since he was 8 years old. Director of Coaching, Dennis Jackson, said “Dylan has been consistently a great goalkeeper for many years in the club, and I'm very happy that through his hard work and the benefits of the club Dylan has carved out this fantastic opportunity.”

Tori Gonzalez has verbally committed to University of Massachusetts at Amherst, a D1 program with a team currently ranked 46th in the nation. UMASS is an outstanding program that has recently signed the U19 Italian National Team Captain, Martina Rosucci. UMASSS has a total of 5 A-10 titles in its history and boasts .671 overall record in its history with 15 NCAA tournament appearances with an impressive 6 final four appearances. Tori knows that her hard work thus far is just the beginning as she joins a very talented squad and her continued development and effort will be expected at UMASS. Tori has been a member of Jersey United for three years and has played each of those years under Spartans 94/95G Blue Head Coach Dominic Rice, who has aided her development over the last three years. Director of Coaching, Dennis Jackson said, “I'm so pleased with Tori’s work rate to get this opportunity, she has put the time in on and off the field to improve and all that hard work has accumulated into the opportunity to play for an excellent program like UMASS.”

JU Club’s Goalkeeper Coach Martin Brown added, “this is a fantastic achievement for these two goalkeepers as well as the club as a whole, to have two Junior Grade players commit to top 50 programs in the same week is outstanding and is a testament to their and the club’s hard work.
ASL Event 2 @ Triangle Friendlies Are Successful For The Boys Team

The Triangle Friendlies hosted the second ASL event for the boys this past weekend. The U15, U16, U17 & U18 boy’s teams played some great competition and some excellent soccer.

The U 15 boys picked up their first win in ASL after some frustrating ties and 1-0 losses. Coach Morris was very proud of the performance level this weekend against top competition. Finishing 1-2-0 with all matches ending in a 1- 0 score line

He felt they played a little kick and rush in the first game however they were very organized off the ball and were very unlucky to go down 1 - 0 on a PK with only five minutes left to play. After the first game Coach Morris asked the boys to possess the ball better and keep it for longer periods allowing the team to play closer together and move the opposition out of their shape, the long pass over the top is too easy to defend against.

He was so happy with the performance on Saturday afternoon against the State Cup champions of VA and then again on Sunday morning against another top team. The team moved the ball out from defensive into midfield and onto the forward players. Taking longer in possession and allowing players to move up the field in order to support each other and link up. This style of play resulted in us creating many chances to score and for those at the last two games it was pleasing on the eye. The passing and moving style is one that the team must continue with moving forward. The players will have great confidence to pass out from the defense on the back of the last two passing performances. This style of play combined with the work the players always do off the ball in terms of remaining in their formation shape, being solid and difficult to break down will allow the boys more success.

Overall a satisfying weekend that saw the players compete very well being in every game and coming away with the win during our last match. Coach Morris believes this past weekend will prove to be very positive as we move forward. Coach Morris added "I was extremely happy with the attitude, level of play and consistency of the team this weekend against quality opposition; we showed we truly have arrived at the top level."

The U16's Boys had a good weekend even though the scores didn't reflect it, although they went 0-3, they were in every game and all the games were competitive. Coach Nash thinks that the performances haven't reflected the scores and the boys are adjusting well to the class of opposition they are playing week in and week out. Coach Nash said "I have been very happy with the performances from the boys against excellent opposition; they have to just keep working hard in practice and the results wil start to match the performances".

The U17 boys started the ASL event 2 3-0 from event 1 at Bethesda and started the games against a very good HSC Heat team Even though the Spartans started sloppily they weren’t tested defensively and were quite comfortable in the game but didn’t create any significant chances offensively. As half time approached HSC broke down the right side of the Spartans and the left forward hit a ball that went past Jimmy Quilter and at half time they were down 1-0. At half time the Spartans switched from a 4-2-3-1 to a 4-4-2 and came out and kept the ball a little better and started to create a few more chances and eventually broke through with a goal from Julian Light. The game was mostly played in the middle of the field and neither team could get a solid foothold in the game. However in the last 10 minutes of the game the Spartans started to dominate and created a handful of chances and with three minutes remaining after a corner, Morgan Ellman combined with Nick Jimenez and at the second attempt Nick Jimenez fired across the keeper into the far corner to give the Spartans the win, 2-1.

In game two at Triangle, the Spartans played the number 10 team Virginia, and from the get go the Spartans were in control of the game and scored early after a ball from Conor Pellas found Julian Light who smashed the ball past the United keeper when one on one. The Spartans came in at half time 1-0 up but should have been ahead more, and if it wasn’t for two excellent saves from Jimmy Quilter the Spartans could have been in trouble at half time. The second half was much of the same with Dylan Castanheira not troubled in the second half at all. The second goal killed the game off and it was a neat finish from Jeff Remley after receiving a quick throw from Morgan Ellman, he lifted the ball nicely over the advancing keeper. Julian Light added a third, and his third of the day, with a few seconds remaining after the keeper parried a shot from Morgan Ellman.

On the final day of the ASL event at Triangle the Spartans took on the number 11 ranked team in VA with only one loss thus far in ASL. The Spartans started the game very well and were knocking the ball around excellently and were rewarded early after a through ball from Conor Pellas, Morgan Ellman smashed the ball across the keeper into the far corner of the net. The Spartans continued to play some excellent soccer and forced many corners and from one of those Conor Pellas corner kicks, Julian Light hit a half volley into the bottom corner to score his 4th goal of the weekend. At half time the Spartans were very comfortable and were working very hard. The second half started the same way and Nick Jimenez was unfortunate to have his header cleared of the line from a Conor Pellas corner. However all changed in about a 4 minute period, Roanoke scored after a long ball free kick wasn’t cleared by the Spartans and the ball fell for the Roanoke player to fire home at the near post to make it 2-1. Three minutes later the ball fell to the Roanoke forward after a miss hit free kick from Dylan Castanheira and the forward slotted hoe to make it 2-2. The Spartans seemed to be running out of gas after a tough weekend with only two subs but there was still time for a header that went in from a Pellas corner to be called back as the assistant referee deemed the ball had curled out of play before coming back into play. Overall Head Coach Martin Brown was very happy with the players and how hard they worked and in particular the soccer they played on the Sunday. The Spartans are now 5-0-1 in ASL, congratulations to the boys for this weekend’s performances.

Coach Brown said, "I was very pleased with the results but we can improve on the performances, and the Sunday performance was closer to what we are looking for week in and week out, but the effort, work rate and attitude of the players was superb and if the boys keep playing this way and getting quality results then it will give me a selection headache."

The U18 Boys came off an undefeated Event 1 @ Bethesda and started well with a 1-0 in game one and followed that up with a hard fought 1-1 game on a difficult field with players, who were starting to become very tired. On Sunday the Spartans got off to a bad start going down 2-0 and as they chased the game they left too many gaps which were exposed by Roanoke. Coach Nash added "I cannot fault the players that had the commitment, although we are disappointed to go 1-1-1, I think the attitude of the boys was excellent and even though we were down to the bare bones in terms of personnel, I was pleased with the overall attitude."

In the Copa division one team from each bracket of four made the final.

The week started well as the Spartans jumped to a quick 2-0 lead over Boca United of Florida, with goals from Julian Light and a free kick from Conor Pellas, the team played very well and held a 2-0 lead at half time. Boca United came back into the game at the start of the second half but the Spartans played good counter attacking soccer and one of those attacks led Jeff Remley to go through one on one with the keeper and slot the ball home for his first goal for Jersey United, to give the Spartans a 3-0 lead. Not even a late consolation from Boca United could dampen the spirits as the game finished 3-1 and a great start for the team.

On Day 2 the Spartans faced on paper their toughest opposition playing Cleveland United fro, Ohio, the number 3 ranked team in Ohio North. The Spartans soon saw the excellence of the opposition and found it difficult to get the ball in the opening exchanges and soon found themselves a goal down after a mix up at the back. The Spartans struggled for most of the first half to get a foot hold in the game but did start to improve in the last 20 minutes of the first half. The Spartans made a couple of adjustments at half time and came out with some fire in the start of the second half and when Conor Pellas lashed a free kick that moved at least four yards from the middle of the goal to the corner to make it 1-1, the game had really turned on its head. The Spartans were now first to every ball and were controlling the temp o of the game. They got their reward with about 15 minutes to go when Conor Pellas played in Julian Light and he hit the bar the ball was half cleared to Kolby Simon who finished brilliantly to make it 2-1, the Spartans managed to see out the last few minutes of pressure from Cleveland to go 2-0 in the group.

Day 3 brought an interesting concept for the Spartans, a win or a tie would put them through but a loss depending on other results may also be enough. The Spartans were playing the Texans from Texas who were 1-1 from the first two days and had to win to have any chance of going through. The Spartans started sluggishly and were probably lucky not to be behind early, a few subs and changes didn’t do the trick and the Texans were working much harder but couldn’t find the final pass or finish. The Spartans were lucky to be 0-0 at the half. Five minutes into the second half a defensive mistake let the Texans forward through on goal and this time they made no mistake and the Spartans found themselves in the hole again 1-0. The response was positive and the play started to improve. They got that bit of luck when things seemed to not be going their way when the Texans right defender tried to clear the ball and in advert ably handled the ball in the box to give the Spartans the break they needed. Mike Dicola slotted the PK home to make it 1-1. This seemed to take the wind out of the sails of the Texans and two goals inside four minutes killed the game. Firstly, Conor Pellas had a great run and slide rule pass to play in Julian Light who fired past the Texans goalkeeper, the same combination did the damage again a couple of minutes later with Pellas flicking on a quick long ball from Dylan Castanheira to put Light threw again and he again beat the keeper and make it 3-1. While not the best performance the character to come back and win was very good after being down for the second day in a row. The Spartans finished 3-0 in their group and moved onto the final against Cape Fear of NC, the number 2 team in NC.

The final started well for the Spartans they controlled the ball and Dylan Weitz almost was played in well by Mike DiCola but the pass and run were unable to connect. The Spartans continued to press and Derek Stiles had a good header well saved by the NC goalkeeper. The Spartans were dealt a big blow three minutes before half time when a long ball was flicked on and the NC striker went one on one with Dylan Castanheira and slotted it home. At half time it was 1-0 Cape Fear. The Spartans came out in the second half and worked hard but didn’t really have the end product that was required to break down a good defense and mid way into the second half the referee missed a blatant foul on Mike DiCola and with him down the NC striker picked up the ball and finished in a bout of confusion the goal stood and it was 2-0. The Spartans tried to chase the game and in doing so went to three at the back and four up front but couldn’t find that piece of magic to get back into the game and were unfortunately hit on the counter attack for the third goal. The 3-0 score line didn’t reflect the game and on another day we may have had one or two things go our way and the game could have been very different. Coach Brown said, “I was very pleased overall, the players played some good soccer against good teams and when we didn’t quite play well we still found a way to win with the exception of the final. The boys handled themselves professionally both on and off the field, they were very responsible and I was very proud of the week we had at such a great event”.

The first ASL tournament at Bethesda took place on November 18th, 19th & 20th, with all the ASL boys’ teams from U14 to U18 in attendance. It was a solid weekend for the boys against stiff competition. Club President, Martin Brown said of the weekend, “it was a great overall experience, the teams did well against good opposition, and all of the coaches did a fantastic job on and off the field with the boys. I was very happy to see the improvements the teams have made and look forward to the second ASL event in North Carolina”.

The JU 97/98B White team travelled to Bethesda having only played 8 games together, since their inception. Having to play teams that have been together for quite a while was always going to pose a problem. The scheduling was not easy, having to play at 8AM on both games, but the players adapted well. The one thing this team has is a lot of spirit and character, which showed, when playing opposition that was maybe a little ahead of where we are right now and with that never say die attitude, we really tested them at times. There were some great positives to come out of a difficult weekend, with team bonding, and knowledge of both individual and team strengths and weaknesses, being highlighted.

The team played some great soccer at times, which needs to be more consistent over game time, but this will improve with every game. Coach Miles added, “I was pleased with the effort of the boys and want to say a big well done to them for all their hard work.”

An encouraging opening weekend for the 96/97 boys Blue saw them open up with a 0 - 0 tie and then fall to 1 - 0 and 2 - 0 score lines. Coach Morris said, “I was happy with our overall play and there are certainly areas to work on along with areas that we can take great encouragement from. I feel we showed we deserve to be competing at this level in terms of our performances. I am confident we will grow as the competition moves along and with more time spent on the practice field. The players will have learned a lot form this past weekend and I am sure they are already excited to take part in our next round of games in January”.

The Spartans 95/96B White team went 0-3 at Bethesda, losing all 3 ASL games by 1 goal. In the 1st game against Soca Lightning (VA), the 2011 Virginia State Cup Champs the Spartans sat back and defended well in the 1st half. 0-0 at halftime and coming out confident that they could play with such a good team, J.U. had the better chances in the 2nd half, hitting the crossbar twice. Eventually an own goal with 10 minutes left, ended up in the back of the goal.

In the second game vs. Prince William Courage (VA), the Spartans came out strong early creating numerous chances, but couldn’t finish. A suspect offside call would have knotted the game in the final 5 minutes, but the final score was a 1-0 loss.

In the final game vs. NC Alliance (2011 Region 3 Premier League Champions), the Spartans went toe to toe with one of the top teams in the Southeast US. The Spartans took an early lead on a goal started by Robbie Principe to Evan Hawkes and finished by Jeremy Kot. NC Alliance took advantage of an open middle of the field and ripped a 25 yard shot in the top corner, a shot not many keepers could save. NC then won a penalty kick and finished the game winning 2-1.

Coach Nash added, “In back to back weekends, the defending from Vyas Maddukuri, Sam Curtis & Gideon Tamir has been exceptional. Jeremy Kot, Evan Hawkes & Luis Goncalves have put in some big performances over the past 7 games and Trevor Bachert was the best player on the field Friday night vs. Soca Lightning, a team with 3 regional players on the team. I was very happy with the three performances and feel the team is improving week in and week out”.

The Spartans 94/95B Blue team went 3-0 in the first ASL weekend, in the first game against SOCA, goals from Conor Pellas and Tim DiBisceglie, from a corner from Pellas, were enough to see SOCA off, after dominating the first half the Spartans sat back a little in the second and after going 2-0 up conceded a sloppy goal to give SOCA some life towards the end of the game. Good defending and goalkeeping from Taylor Sovelove was enough to see out the game.

The second game saw the Spartans take on a good NY Elite team, the game was 0-0- at half time and although the Spartans had chances even going into a strong wind, they were unable to capitalize despite being the better team in the first half. Improvements were made after half time and a rocket free kick from Conor Pellas into the top corner from 22 yards gave the Spartans the lead, they went on to create other chances but it wasn’t until Dylan Hammer beat the last defender with a nice move and repeated it one v one with the goalkeeper to walk the ball in to make it 2-0 was the game safe.

The last game saw the Spartans play a good, strong, athletic Warrington team from PA, the game was played in a physical manner with very few chances at all in the game. Danny Reilly got into some good positions wide right but the Spartans couldn’t connect. The defended very well and against tough pressure and about 15 minutes into the second half Derek Stiles played the ball wide to Spenser Heller who cut inside beating the right defender and completely fooling the covering center back with a scissors move before sliding the ball past the on rushing goalkeeper to give the Spartans the 1-0 lead. Some excellent defending from Robby Bonjione, Tim DiBisceglie, Conor Kelly and Derek Stiles saw the game out and allowed the Spartans to go to 3-0 for the weekend and 3-0 for the Atlantic Soccer League. Coach Brown added, “I was pleased with the victories and the way the boys hustled and the way the team defended, there are still areas to improve on and we have to put it all together for 80 minutes, but it is a very good starting point and I look forward to the next ASL event."

A 2-1 start to the ASL league for the 93/94B White team doesn’t sound like a bad weekend, but the Spartans know they lost a great opportunity to start 3-0. Leaving countless goal scoring opportunities on the field vs. South Jersey Barons (NJ), the Spartans know they should have done better. Dylan Stankowitz and Jack Caffrey dominated the middle of the field, but the offense couldn’t find the back of the net.

In the 2nd game vs. Montgomery United (PA), 7 unanswered goals proved that the Spartans are a team with some serious firepower this year. Newcomer Tyler Raff started off the scoring, followed by a 25 yard strike from Jordin Henry, a 20 yard rocket by James Lynch, a nice finish by Julian Light, another newcomer Zach Frazier getting 2 goals and Jeremy Robbins scoring on a beautiful individual 1v1 move. The defense was organized and didn’t have much to do all day.

In the final game vs. Hockessin Strikers (#1 team in DE & a top 25 team in Region 1) the Spartans dominated the game and finished with a 2-0 victory. On a long ball over the top from Chris Hall, the Hockessin defender & goalkeeper got crossed-up and Julian Light was there to finish. Tyler Raff scored a sensational volley after Jordin Henry played a ball over the top to him. Hockessin had 2 dangerous scoring chances and the Spartans had others including a rocket from Robbins that nicked the bar.

Coach Nash added, “Overall a good weekend, but could have been even better. Tyler Duggan, Chris Hall & Kyle Morris were excellent at the back and most players played well in front on many college coaches on hand at the event.
